GIANT ROBOT 12 July 2010 11:12 (permalink)
This year and for the first time, we have a Giant Robot restaurant at Latitude. That’s right, a proper sit down lunch/dinner, on a chair, at a table, with waitress service, a china plate and a real knife and fork.

In a field. With a lovely bottle of wine and the sun shining. Perfect.

Expect to eat Grilled Red Snapper with cherry tomatoes, basil and garlic, Roast Butternut Squash & Ricotta Tortelloni with broccoli, pesto, walnuts and pecorino, NY Strip Steak with Woodford Reserve peppercorn sauce and Spaghetti & Meatballs with GR tomato sauce.

And then to hell with it and order an Ice Cream Sandwich with two homemade cookies and your choice of gelato.

If you’re thirsty then dig into a Fresh Lemonade before trying all of the Prosecco Cocktails (Bellini, Giant Spritz, Martini Royale) one after another and then a Festival Special Ma-hoo-Sive Mojito and a Giant Island Ice Tea. And that still leaves the wine list to work your way down…

Giant Robot normally lives in Clerkenwell, London but they'll be popping up for three and a bit days at Latitude for eat and drink in and for take out.

Serving lunch, dinner and drinks from 11am till 3am (or maybe later) every day (Fri-Sun) and from 6pm on Thursday.

If you like your lunch Italian, your dinner relaxed and your beer and cocktails icy cold,.. you’ll love Giant Robot.

You can make a booking NOW by calling 020 7065 6849 or emailing latitude@gntrbt.com with your booking details – name, day, time and number in your party. From noon on Thursday, you can make a booking by calling one of GR's festival mobiles (07990 978166 or 07775 935104) and if any of that doesn’t work, just pop down and see them at any time on site after 6pm on Thursday and book yourself in.

Giant Robot will be down by the lake (where the theatre tent used to be).

Kind of psyched for this, reckon I'll have a proper meal there at some point, seems pretty cool.
I'll just book on site though.

secret garden party is doing a similar thing.

on the one hand I admit I quite fancy this if I’m honest, and it is clearly another commercial element that will drive income for the festival and therefore (hopefully) peg ticket prices or limit capacity.

but then again… am I the only one who feels like it’s yet another nail in the coffin of traditional festivals (e.g. along the lines of posh camping and VIP tickets) that ultimately will end up with separate entrance gates for rich and poor?
And I'm running out of patience
To be ****ing with you now
You better believe me when I say
      This now

I'm very tempted to take the missus for brunch on Sunday, would be a very nice start to the day.  Hmmm I'll mull over this one a bit

Sound a good idea but I looked at the menu and decided to give it a miss.

Is that because they aren't serving burnt toast? ......no wait a minute - that would mean you are a cannibal.

LOL.. I only eat burnt toast at home.. only when looking for a forum name that hasn't been taken.

serious answer is that they don't have much veggie choice.

I'm with you on that Burnt_toast. Perhaps I shouldn't have gone vegan so close to summer. Might have myself a Number5 salad or whatever they call it though- looks 'filling'

I'm going to give it a go. Posh camping, or glamping, is best of both worlds. I do, however, promise to slum it for the rest of the weekend.

a festival seems like the worse possible place and time to have a posh sit down meal. You're all dirty (or you should be at least), there's constantly loads of awesome things to do that you've already paid for, and you're going to be paying a big mark-up on the meal you're buying compared to if you bought it outside the festival.

The entrance/sign thing for it looked stunning at night though.

I went for a meal there because i thought it looked quite interesting and was pleasantly impressed actually.

The price wasn't too bad, especially considering the price of other food on site which you don't have a nice seating area for and cutlery...etc. Plus, we found the service to be really fast. It was quite nice too to have a proper sit down in the sun with an ice cold cocktail for a short while.

Also, they did do take away food from the deli bar if you did want something but didn't want to have a little sit down...nearly went for the takeaway meatballs but maybe next year?!

You were in the wrong place.  Opposite the kids area should be a family friendly restaurant.  You were also underprepared and did not have enough signs or staff to ensure people entered through your system - wanting people to come in through a single access point when your tent is open on 3 sides is just never going to work.

Better luck next time - though I will never use you again.

This is the feedback I just sent Giant Robot at their request - we were not impressed!

Thanks for the opportunity to provide feedback on Giant Robot at Latitude.  We were very much looking forward to our meal but were very disappointed with the whole experience.

I had originally booked a table for 4 people at 7pm on Thursday, which I needed to change to accommodate 5 people.  On phoning to make the change I was told this was absolutely no problem, however on arrival the staff seemed to be very inconvenienced by this, even though the restaurant was almost completely empty.  We were taken right across the empty restaurant through the glorious sunlight and instructed to sit in a cold patch of shade at the back!

The waitress was apparently unable to take orders from 5 people correctly and completely missed one of the meals off – giant prawns and fries.  We spotted this on the arrival of the bill and asked for the meal to be included and served with everyone else’s.  One of our party had ordered the baby chicken which arrived at the table so undercooked it was bleeding, and was immediately sent back to the kitchen.  No giant prawns and fries arrived.  When the re-cooked chicken came back with a complimentary beer, the person who’s meal still hadn’t arrived asked if they would get a free drink as they hadn’t had the food they’d paid for.  The manager, in an exceptionally rude tone stated that we were in a field and what did we expect!  Frankly we expected to be given the food we’d ordered and paid for.

Our party ate their food, which was bland to say the least; and after waiting almost an hour for the missing prawns, and asking waiting staff several times to check it was on it’s way, we cut our loses, got the money back for the meal and left.

I expected the service to have a few teething problems, and would have happily accepted apologies along the way, as long we eventually received our orders.  This would have been no problem at all, and would all have been part of the festival fun.  What I didn’t expect was incompetent and downright rude staff members treating us as an inconvenience.  Needless to say no-one in our party was particularly complimentary about the service over the course of the festival and suggested to friends that they’d be better off giving it a miss as the food from the catering outlets was much better.

What seemed like such a fantastic idea really didn’t come together at all.
