Hello Roger. No. I've been thinking about it, but it's the best part of a thousand pages, I think. I've got too much of a book backlog to add that to the pile. I worry it would just sit on the shelf scowling at me, like the Antony Beevor Spanish Civil War effort that still sits there, waiting and waiting.

Ive finally started reading "Juliet, Naked" and it's good although I don't think it'll equal High Fidelity or How To Be Good.

try and actually enjoy lord of the flies bitteorca, dont just treat the read as an academic exercise. must have read it three, maybe four times and it never dulls (and i have never seen the film). while on hoppo/roberts subject of re-reading, am currently on my third read of east of of eden. lots of people seem to *do* grapes of wrath and never bother with it, which is a shame cos i'd say it was fairly epic. as you can see, i do like novels.
And I'm running out of patience To be ****ing with you now You better believe me when I say This now

Lord of the flies is a classic 'good book ruined by terrible English teacher' experience for me, unfortunately. I gave up the subject after GCSEs because I just couldn't face it any more. If only I'd had Mr Moochoo to inspire me.

Partly inspired by the thought of Thomas' Latitude mix CD, I have just read this: I enjoyed it a great deal. As a fan boy and having had it for my birthday (might start a whole thread about what I got for my birthday) I have started the Stewart Lee memoir thing, thus:

I got that Frankie Boyle book the other day, not read it yet, I've been buying loads of books (and a few DVDs) from Amazon while I'm in England for the summer to make use of their free postage, because they charge far too much to post things to Europe, in fact I'm going home tomorrow with a suitcase packed totally with books/DVDs... and a poker set for the missus.

riverlodge Roger and a poker set for the missus. fire? gambling? care to elaborate? Gambling. It's a little metallic case containing poker chips, playing cards and other bits needed for a game of poker, which apparently she plays, but I don't. I bought her it as a present when she was here for Latitude but it was too heavy to take home (it seems poker chips weigh a bit), so I'm taking it home in the morning..... and my suitcase is looking a bit suspicious right now, it looks like Del Boy going on holiday.

BeeRose Ive finally started reading "Juliet, Naked" and it's good although I don't think it'll equal High Fidelity or How To Be Good. My copy of High Fidelity had a warning on the back suggesting male readers shouldn't let their wives or girlfriends read the book as it would give them far too clear an insight into the male psyche. All very sweeping, I know, but I think there's a grain of truth in that - a very good read.

Riverlodge that is weird as I have literally just finished East of Eden, I studied The Grapes of Wrath for A-level English and loved it, big Steinbeck fan. It's a fab read Giddy, and I can definitely see the truth in that, all my male friends who have read it say they really relate to it.

If only I'd had Mr Moochoo to inspire me. Gosh, the amount of times I've had to teach that over the years. Interesting narrator - look-out for that, Bitteorca. I don't generally have to inspire students with this one, unusually: most tend to bond with Jack, Ralph and the boys. Everyone loves Piggy - again, the interesting narrative voice helps. Don't like what they do to my namesake, however - interesting narrative standpoint helps.

have just finished reading 'jeff in venice, death in varanasi' by geoff dyer its pretty good, both funny and poignant, with some good cracks about modern art, love & sex, and religion...what more could you want...it goes quite against the grain for me to read a mainstream british novel, but this is well worth a few hours of any ones time
I'm so sick of Snow Patrol, and where to find Esso lubricant & mobile numbers.

BeeRose Now reading American Psycho, it's equal parts compelling and disturbing. Once saw an art instillation based upon A.P. - it consisted of every page of the novel passed on a wall with everything whited out except brand names...there was less than i expected, but still i dont remember a totally blank page...just thought i would share this, it a great book, that repays some deep thinking, or something

ok,so...no one hardly looks at this thread so i could pretty much say what i want... anyways, just finished 'the pendragon legend' by the hungarian writer Antal Szerb...and what a bloody great novel it is, like some insane mash up of m.r. james and agatha christie, shot through with the absurdist humour of frankie kafta...top notch page turner also; cool stuff

OMG BeeRose, another minor coincidence. I've been reading a Bret Easton Ellis novel as well. The Rules of Attraction.
