Is this really Latitude?? - 21 July 2009 18:34
Hi all,
I and my partner have attended 2007, 2008 and 2009 and loved every single one. So much so I am passionate about the festival as I believe in what it stands for and what you get out of it is a truly amazing experience that stays with you forever. Having said al that i have a problem...

It’s Saturday afternoon at BEEFY MELON’S VINTAGE TEMPLE OF LOVE & GRATITUDE (according to the site map). The sun is out and there are large groups of children + parents milling about. Some of the children are playing while others are dancing and generally having a good time. I and my partner are sitting on a bench eating some food purchased from one of the food trailers nearby. Suddenly the volume of music being pumped out of Beefy Melons tent is increased and a track starts to be played with the lyrics...
“Go on then, just this once
Use my arsehole as a ****
Use my arse, use my arse
Use my arsehole, use my arse
Go on then, just this once
Use my arsehole as a ****
Use my arse, use my arse
Use my arsehole, use my arse"

I’ve googled theses lyrics and discovered that’s it’s by a band called Kunt and The Gang. There whole of the track was played and if you need to see the rest of the lyrics you could always Google them too but i think you get the picture.

I don’t have a problem with swearing inc the ‘C’ word depending on where and when it’s used but I do have a problem with hearing it blasted out in front of children ranging from 3 to 10 year old's at a festival that promotes itself to families.

Latitude - is this really what you want as part of your programme??

I have to admit, I did hugely enjoy it when Shellac's Prayer To God (which, for the unitiated finishes with 1 minute or so of Steve Albini shouting "KILL HIM! ****ING KILL HIM! KILL HIM! JUST ****ING KILL HIM! ****ING KILL HIM!) was blasted out infront of hundreds of people on the Lake Stage in the afternoon.

a tactical rub with the tips of the fingers just below the balls usually eradicates shaking of the tent, and makes for a very interesting fap

I admit it is difficult to control this.

I listened to The Enemy and Oasis live last night on XFM and at every song break Tom Clarke and Liam were effing and jeffing. XFM did warn me though, so I sent my 10 year old who wanted to listen to bed.

I heard very little swearing at latitude but I avoided the comedy tent!

We heard some swearing in literary and from some of the music stages.

As long as the kids understand that these words are not appropriate at home or at school or with their peers then everything is ok. It is part of growing up.

Oops this was entirely my fault. Didn't think there was any kids in the tent at the time. Did avoid playing sweary songs when there was, we were having a joke song moment.
Total lapse of judgement on my behalf, all I can do is apologise.

Personally, I would have been far more offended if he had played Oasis or The Enemy.

Unless this was in the children's area I'm not really seeing a problem. Kids are going to see and hear things like this at music festivals. Including family-friendly ones.

I'd feel cheated if performers or DJs were avoiding swearing because children's parents might hear. Did any of the children actually appear disturbed in any way? I'm pretty sure I'd have found this funny. Sure, the parents have some explaining to do, but that's an obvious consquence/advantage of taking your kids to a place like that.

On another note, I saw a couples of times parents walking their kids up to the woods at night as I was walking out. I wish I'd have followed them to witness the reaction.

There was a fair few parents with kids in the Jake Chapman talk as well, made me LOL, I missed the screening of HELL at the start but I imagine the children's faces would be quite special.

I work in a school and 11 year olds know more swear words than I do! But most of them know that they shouldn't use them, I think we've got to just accept they're going to hear them and know them, they just need to know they are inappropriate and shouldn't use them.

somewhat off topic, but does anyone else think that kunt and the gang would go down a storm next year? I think he'd be ideal for the cabaret tent
