Why not check out his Wikipedia page?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_Haines

I used to be a big fan of the Auteurs circa 1993, and some of his other stuff later on. Haven't listened to him for over a decade though..

This post really is me at my most articulate.

I agree with every word, needless to say.

I saw him at the tiny Hanbury Ballroom here in Brighton and can add him to the list of artists who have brushed past me on their way to the stage, joining such luminaries as Sleater Kinney and The Pipettes in this regard.

As you say, he was charm itself and clearly enjoying himself. It was a shame that he seems in somewhat reduced circumstances; I don't know what the other venues on the tour are like (Manchester Deaf Centre?) but the Hanbury hasn't really got a proper stage or P.A) and his YTS band seemed a touch incongruous.

I really like the album and am surprised by the dismissive reviews. He usually gets quite the acclaim almost by default, but I think this is his most focused record for some time. There is one atrocious line, which I will moan about later, when I'm at home and can remind myself what it is.

Agree about the appeal of the Foxbase Beta record, I think it's lovely.

Luke Haines is our finest indie sourpuss hoppo, right up your alley.

I actually think hoppo would like his Baader Meinhoff album, though.

Yeah Hoppo, you should totally check Haines out. He's great. You need to overlook his anti-Northern stance, mind. There is lots of material to have a listen to. Wikipedia is more use than me on the facts. I think Nico R is right to recommend Baader Meinhof, his 70s funk homage to terrorism. I shan't drone on about his back catalogue tho...would be diminishing returns for all concerned. Haines reviews most of it himself in the sleevenotes to Das Capital: The Songwriting Genius of Luke Haines and The Auteurs, which is a sort-of best-of, featuring Auteurs songs rerecorded in a lush orchestral style.

The Deaf Institute is actually a pretty trendy venue in Manchester, but it was a bit of a thin crowd. He's hardly gone after commercial success, I suppose. The new album is his best in ages and sounds like something which could actually sell a few copies, but I don't think it's setting the charts alight.

Will stop writing about Haines for now. My apologies to anyone bored by it all.

Would be ACE if 'The Cellist' came to do a solo slot this year.

P.S. Attention Haines fans: he's playing a gig in London in 2 days time. I won't be there.

Wouldn't mind a gig from The Cellist actually. Get him and Paul Morley on stage in their Infantjoy guise.

I am also not going to the London gig.

At this distance from the album release, it has only grown on me and I think I would say that it is his best "solo" album by some distance. A record that defines what someone does so perfectly that you can only worry about what will they will do next.

You're not bloody wrong there. It's a proper gem of an album. Is it the best solo album? Don't ask me to rank them. I couldn't do it. But it is absolutely a man who's on top of his game, who's mastered his art, etc.

I quite want an excuse to visit London on Thursday, just for one more Haines Hit. Maybe I should go and visit my ailing grandmother.

And I'm always worried about what Haines is going to do next.

I was going to do you a Spotify introduction thing, but there's not really enough on there.

For you Grouchland, After Murder Park might be best, but New Wave and 21st Century Man would be my choices.

On reflection, the somewhat reflective and sumptuous 21st Century Man might be a bit middle aged for the thrill seeking youth.

The Luke Haines is Dead compilations would have a been a decent reply, if I'd thought of it 11 hours ago.

I would offer to do a CD when I send your Latitude Forums compilation CD, but I'm sure you'll be a expert by the end of the weekend anyway and I'd only be up all night worrying whether Thomas would like the tracklist.

                                      Amazing.

I'd recommend Luke Haines is Dead. Very comprehensive, and excellent sleevenotes. Das Capital also has good sleevenotes, but you can already listen to it on Spotify. Maybe as a youth you should listen to his modern r 'n' b album the Oliver Twist Manifesto. All his albums have something to offer.

I would be very interested to hear what Nico would put on a Best Of Haines. We can compare notes. PICK TEN SONGS.
