i must say, the Maccabees album is pretty good, even if it's not 'my kinda thing'.

also listened to the past week:

henny moan: the coming thaw cd-r. free download from his site whatever the address is. an associate of hype williams, i think, applying their own brand of post-modernist distillation to house + techno, ending up not sounding dissimilar to drexciya. really great.

richard youngs: amaranthine. this album is really good! abstract percussion in the 4th dimension, looped folk guitar and his mantric vocals stir together for an album which surprisingly manages to exist in the broughton-eque [david thomas broughton that is]. often funny and often beautiful this is one of the best albums of january.

starving weirdos: land lines. not unlike his last album with ensemble economique this is an album of cultural tourist drones but whereas with that group it is western drone with eastern flecks this is eastern drone with western flecks. one for hoppo or moochoo i think.

still need to check out lana del rey and a few others.

lana del rey: born to die. ITS GOOD, AUTHENTIC POP MUSIC. nah not really. some of the songs are pretty good, some are pretty bland. bit of a grab bag, you all know what it's like i guess. great aesthetic though, looking forward to see her headline the word arena.

sharon van etten: tramp. BORING. liked the single as it sounds kinda like the national [probably because the guy from the national produced it] but the rest of them are just really really boring. boring. dull.

schoolboy q: habits & contradictions. can't remember what this sounds like which is never a good sign. think it was decent enough though so i might listen to it again in a bit.

rome fortune: voyeur EP. really good lo-fi casio swag hip hop. some of the tracks swing really hard for a cheap ****ty keyboard in conjuction with audacity. not particularly an expert on rapping technique but this guy sounds OK.

spaceghostpurrp: god of black. decent follow up to a decent mixtape from last year. apparently an EP though it's about 40 minutes long, no doubt this is because every hip hop LP released these days is about 25 tracks spread over 3 hours. some of the lyrics are awful on this, proper cringey stuff about how he's in "the rap game" because his mother can't feed him, but apart from that the production is as sinister as previously and there are a few good guest spots.

pop. 1280: the horror. do you like the birthday party? if so you'll like this band. pretty much ripping them off wholesale but the source material is good enough so why not? kinda like how veronica falls get by on stealing the velvets pop era by nailing it.

evian christ: kings and them. witch house or whatever, i think, clams casino style dystopian hip hop instrumentals. got quite a lot of hype at the moment which he/she probably doesn't deserve but it's not bad so let's wait and see what happens.

beth jeans houghton & the hooves of destiny: yours truly, cellophane nose. what a mouthful. been about 5 years since she started getting column inches, and i'm talking about in the music press not because she's currently going out with anthony keidis. not worth the wait, infact this album veers pretty too close to mumfords territory in some places, but the ones where she lets her personality shine are pretty enjoyable.

field music: plumb. never heard this band before but i put the new album on earlier and kept going back for more. proggy pop songwriting in the vein of a modern take on the canterbury scene. structurally similar to forum favourites the cardiacs but more easy listening. very good.

think i'm up to date now

Plumb sounded very good when I listened to most of it earlier. My favourite Field Music related thing is the self-titled The Week That Was album.

Also, there are a couple of listenable songs on the Chairlift album, a couple of good ones on the Two Bears album, and several absolute bangers on the Pet Shop Boys b-sides album.

guess most on here would have already tried learning, this isn't dissimilar, somewhat less sparse still hauntingly beautiful.

On first appraisal, Triangle’s extraordinary Field-Music pronouncement appeared fanciful at very least.

Why? I bought their ‘Tones of Town’ record upon its release, and – despite enduring around four spins – it left such minimal impression that I simply cannot recall a single song or hook from it now. Energising my memory chip on its maximum setting, I vaguely recollect pleasant ditties, but these certainly did not belong in the company cited by Triangle – though I fully appreciate that he hadn’t heard this record.

Well, I yanked ‘Plumb’ onto Spotify – ready to send a cynical salvo right back at Triangle’s vertices...

However, I was warmly surprised by this new record – and can perceive the Cardiacs feel that Triangle identifies. They’ve really pulled-out all the exclamation marks in expanding their sound range; ‘Plumb’ is lightly proggy with so many mood changes that someone really ought to shove a Samaritans leaflet through their collective box.

Really good – even if the Canterbury-scene reference is something of a stretch: they’re not nearly weird enough for that.

Still, I find myself indebted to Triangle for his comprehensive review of the year thus far. The Srarving Weirdos record gets the Moochoo thumbs-up that he predicted too. Thanbk you!

Incidentally, if anyone is interested, the recent band that come closet to Cardiacs, for my wonga, is Knifeworld. Super stuff: Knifeworld – Buried Alone: Tales of Crushing Defeat No, it's not a 2012 release, but forget your mamary-toting partners, and give your ears a real treat this Valentine's Day!

What do you think of Knifeworld, Giddy and Triangle?
I know not why I am so Tory!

I may be in the usual position of touting a record before Triangle, who appears to be an octopus – but with eight ears rather than legs.

Anyway, the 2012 release in question is ‘Ten$Ion’ by the South-African rap trio dubbed Die Antwoord. Crazy stuff, kids.

It’s worth noting that this record has mustered mixed reviews (including approximately seven thumbs-down from Pichfork, but a deformed-hand’s worth of thumbs-up from The Quietus http://thequietus.com/articles/08006-die-antwoord-tension-review ). This may be because it ****es over rather a lot of rules, and is often tastelessly crass.

                                    Well, I like it.

Its vibrant upbeat, err, beats – by turns reminiscent of the Ibiza dance-offs and the variety of hardcore porn reserved for the filthy old ****er in the purpose-built, reinforced mackintosh – work nicely with the tainted-mouthed patois.

Not sure I’ll still be listening to it come December’s big reckoning – though I’m yet to sort out 2011’s Baker’s dozen – but it’s certainly worth a spin. Perhaps a perfect fit for Thomas and Hoppo – at his most pervy.

                                    Die Antwoord – TEN$ION

2012, eh? I have now heard twelve long-playing records; here they are in current order of preference:

                                    6) Evolve or be extinct by Wiley

                                    5) Let’s go eat the factory by Guided by Voices

                                    4) Ten$Ion by Die Antwoord

                                    3) Plumb by Field Music

                                    2) Land lines by Starving Weirdos

                                    1) Paralytic Stalks by Of Montreal (I even bought this one: though I was grievously disappointed by the packaging – Barnes really spoiled us with Skeletal Lamping, one of the most beautiful albums both internally and externally – it is a flipping fantastic record. What is you updated verdict, Triangle?)

Right, I am off to lampoon further 2012 releases.

despite being slightly let down by Paralytic Stalks upon first listen, I now realise it's one of the greatest things ever recorded.

                                        ANNOUNCEMENT:

I have a song included on the new Holy Page tape compilation!

My song is featured on the same tape as none other than JAPANTHER and comes before a beautiful track by The Mennonites. It's called 'An Imperfect Feeling of Content'.

I can't stress enough that you should give the tapes a listen. There are two tapes. I'm on 'Body'. There really is something for everyone; Creepy Marbles is warped hip-hop, Balloons is really catchy lo-fi indie pop, The Mennonites is beautiful spoken word, Hug of War is Elephant Six-esque pop, Jordan Knecht is folktronica reminiscent of the Books, Japanther is lo-fi noise pop and Hi My Name Is Ryan is self-deprecating yet touching anti-folk.

Please check out the label, it's run by Christian, a real cool guy who does all the art, curation and, well, business. It's got some great artists on it, this is one of the best things I've heard this year. Please buy some tapes or zines to support the label and make sure he releases more compilations in the future!
