Oops I'm late but happy birthday TCP...an apt acronym if ever there was one.
Many thanks for the birthday greetings from all - and sympathy for the embattled Riverlodge.
The following will bore most members senseless (why don't I tag that line to all of my posts, eh?):
As such definitions comprise a significant part of the inanity of my working life (and because everyone enjoys correcting me), ‘TCP’ is not an acronym: it is an initialism. Acronyms – such as ROM and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, in case anyone was wondering) – can be pronounced as a word (so will be made up of consonants and vowels), as opposed to the individual letters of the words from which they are taken.
Initialisms – RSPCA, BBC etc – are more common. TCP derives, I believe, from the memorable chemical term ‘trichlorophenylmethyliodosalicyl’, which just happens to feature the letters t, c and p. Thus, whilst not a classic case, it does qualify as an initialism – which is really just a form of abbreviation. More recently, it also denotes Transmission Control Protocol - but I like to think Thomas still thinks back to TCP's application by the plump school matron, for whom he harboured a curious passion.
Perhaps, as I do, some sad soul out there finds this (the linguistics, rather than Thomas' school fling) interesting.
Nevertheless, now I have jettisoned this from my system, I greatly appreciate Thomas’ joke.
