i've counted it as a reissue i.e. not in a list of 2011 records. but it is incredible yeah.
has never actually been officially issued, so a reissue it is not...
and while i am here, splitting hairs with some one who no doubt would like to split an atom,
my fourth fav record of 2011, was, if comments on this forum was concerned, and comments from my own children, mainly my metal loving son...something of a travesty...nevermind...young people have forgotten what rock and roll is all about,,,thankfully lou reed has finally remembered.
4. Lulu - Lou Reed & Metallica... yeah yeah, i have heard all the criticism, from real dullarses mainly...but this really rocks my boat...not only is absurd, and in a good way, it massively deconstructs the whole metal ethos, and takes it somewhere strange....the thing is, metallica pull their usual shapes, more or less...but with Reed on vocal, take the genre into a whole new baal park...Reed cranks up the misogyny, the misanthropy, the nihilism of metal lyrics: but instead of the usual histrionics, the usual sub-sub mock operatic-debased Wagnerian over the top screeching... dead-pans it...dead pans songs of hatefulness while Metallica crank it up...
i dont much like lou reed, but this is maybe his best solo record since metal machine music, certainly his best since his high of White Light White Heat...it was also nearly my favourite Fall record of the year, the vocals are that good...the band are a bit lame though...the similarities are astounding, strangely enough...
this is a great record and in years to come, some people will hate themselves for not loving it when it was released (astro-boy...madix etc...)
might as well number 5, and the token folk record
now it has been suggested to me, that the rise in folk over the last couple of years mirrors the rise in intellectual racism ... i dont know nothing about that...all i know is that beardy middle class guitar strummers whom count Dave Cammeron as fans are not folk musicians(or even musicians really)
but the Unthanks are
5....The Unthanks - Last....real musicians that is, real folk music as well... cannot big this record up enough...the real sound of English Folk Music in 2011...mainly comprised of songs from the North East... Geordie songs that is...they also do a couple of originals, and bizzarly a King Crimson cover...but they do them with such elegance, and not a strumming guitar insight...just a string quartet, trumpet, piano amd bass...fantastic, and like a shot of immunity to the like of bumford and sons etc etc...lefty folk- quiet and proud
