you been into the Julia Holter record btw, m8? interesting mix of NNF/100% Silk hazy disco vibes with more traditional 'composition' + nick cave's recontexualising of greek tragedies for the contemporary age. listened to it a lot the past week. there's a concept etc behind it so it really needs to be listened as one piece but here are a couple of standouts:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zu5QVDdThdw [try to make yourself a work of art]

reckon it would be right up your street

well this is my new years resolution broken...(not to post on here anymore in case yrs interested)

still i cannot believe nobody has chose as their record of last year, The Beach Boys Smile sessions....what the frank is up with you people, are you all deaf, do you not know sheer god like godlikeness when you hear it?
or is the box set just too too daunting that you all gave it a wide birth - well you can just down load the first cd, the original album very cheaply...it is wonderful, beautiful, annoying, infuriating, and absolutely gorgeous...so

    3. The Beach Boys - Smile...

and btw, multiple takes of good vibrations are fascinating

moochoos might think i may make a comment on his list...sorry dude, time of the month.

i've counted it as a reissue i.e. not in a list of 2011 records. but it is incredible yeah.

has never actually been officially issued, so a reissue it is not...
and while i am here, splitting hairs with some one who no doubt would like to split an atom,

my fourth fav record of 2011, was, if comments on this forum was concerned, and comments from my own children, mainly my metal loving son...something of a travesty...nevermind...young people have forgotten what rock and roll is all about,,,thankfully lou reed has finally remembered.

        4. Lulu - Lou Reed & Metallica... yeah yeah, i have heard all the criticism, from real dullarses mainly...but this really rocks my boat...not only is absurd, and in a good way, it massively deconstructs the whole metal ethos, and takes it somewhere strange....the thing is, metallica pull their usual shapes, more or less...but with Reed on vocal, take the genre into a whole new baal park...Reed cranks up the misogyny, the misanthropy, the nihilism of metal lyrics: but instead of the usual histrionics, the usual sub-sub mock operatic-debased Wagnerian over the top screeching... dead-pans it...dead pans songs of hatefulness while Metallica crank it up...
i dont much like lou reed, but this is maybe his best solo record since metal machine music, certainly his best since his high of White Light White Heat...it was also nearly my favourite Fall record of the year, the vocals are that good...the band are a bit lame though...the similarities are astounding, strangely enough...

this is a great record and in years to come, some people will hate themselves for not loving it when it was released (astro-boy...madix etc...)

might as well number 5, and the token folk record

now it has been suggested to me, that the rise in folk over the last couple of years mirrors the rise in intellectual racism ... i dont know nothing about that...all i know is that beardy middle class guitar strummers whom count Dave Cammeron as fans are not folk musicians(or even musicians really)

        but the Unthanks are
5....The Unthanks - Last....real musicians that is, real folk  music as well... cannot big this record up enough...the real sound of English Folk Music in 2011...mainly comprised of songs from the North East... Geordie songs that is...they also do a couple of originals, and bizzarly a King Crimson cover...but they do them with such elegance, and not a strumming guitar insight...just a string quartet, trumpet, piano amd bass...fantastic, and like a shot of immunity to the like of bumford and sons etc etc...lefty folk- quiet and proud

Good garden stuff, there seems to be masses to respond to since my last post:

As I am the boss, I will deal with the various issues in an entirely random order:

Firstly, a top ten featuring Beyonce and Lady Gaga with so many great records on the loose? The concept has provoked me to violence. I can only conclude that you have the ear infection to end all ear infections. Beyonce better than Shabazz Palaces, and every other release this past twelve months? Ridiculous! May the vertices of your triangle wither and decay…

Even the NME, who love Beyonce and remain her greatest defenders, could only muster four out of ten for this record (reviewed in the same issue as their collective masturbation in anticipation of her Glastonbury performance).

You have some explaining to do, young man!

Come on, post a link for the record’s strongest rack, and justify its brilliance; I will take up the challenge, listen to it objectively (free from preconceptions) and then instruct the Barnsley mafia to seek out and destroy it.

Regarding ‘Smile’, the notion that it has never been released before is a mere technicality – the equivalent of the current off-side regulations proclaiming the innocence of an ‘inactive’ player. My 2004’s Bakers’ Dozen was adorned by Brian Wilson’s ‘Smile’ and I remain a sizeable fan, though this was (in turn) a rehash – however superior – of ‘Smiley Smile’ (imperfect and incomplete as it was). The decision to stick those songs through the cash register once again in 2011 (imbued with additional tracks as the disc may be) scratches even my least cynical organs. Yes, they are great songs, but we have all heard the bulk of them before – in two previous incarnations. For purists only. Oddly, when it comes to the Wilsons, I probably favour Dennis Wilson’s ‘Pacific Ocean Blues’.

Well, that’s me off the Easter Egg list of another few forumers. Anyone still love Moo?

Back to before I was furious with Triangle and lost the desire to embrace him tenderly: I will certainly give Julia Holter the Moochoo treatment. I love anything that is ambitious; this sounds smashing. Thanks for the recommendation.

Oh yes, the Jenny Hval lyrics are fantastic: the stuff you quoted (a farcical update of the vagina dentate legend – recognising the need to ward off vaginal-tooth decay with a splash of Colgate) is a penis-popping opening to a very complex record, whose lyrics are often fathoms deep, and then ridiculous… as one’s tired noggin enjoys a nibble on a crumpet:

‘Viscera’ is the record that Joanna Newsom would have made had she severed Bill Callahan’s member with her ravenous organ, flipped him over and penetrated his various orifices with a blunt breeze block. Yes, it is perverted Joanna Newsom (though often restrained and understated too) blended with a little nonsense for good measure.  Feminism at its finest - and a major a strike against conventionality!

The music forms the perfect complement.

We are not looking at a big seller, however: Sister Ray only ever ordered one copy of it, which took six months to sell; even Boomkat don’t have the sod (ten months on from its release). Strangely, it is on Spotify.

Finally, I am delighted that Hoppo has broken his resolution by contributing to this thread: the idea of the forum without him really would prompt a trip to Beachy Head. The same goes for – Beyonce fan boy though he may be – Triangle and Nico. The three of them are vital to our wellbeing.
I know not why I am so Tory!

What an extraordinary and unexpected accolade.  I admit I looked for the sting in the tail, but none came. Praise from Caesar.

could you listen to the album first, then make a post saying what you thought of it, and then i can respond to the points you will or will not made.

The first Bjork record I have really enjoyed since Vespertine.
