Official Festival App
19 July 2011 12:31
( permalink)
I know an app is a luxury and not something that should make the slightest difference to your enjoyment of the festival, but this was just irritating. After Glasto's brilliantly smooth, user friendly app, this just served to highlight the difference between the commercial orientations of the two festivals. The app was useless without the scan code to unlock the timetable. You couldn't get the scan code without buying the £9 programme (also the only way of getting a printed version of the timetable). I did that, only to discover that the app couldn't read my scan because I was supposed to have scanned it through the app itself, not independently. But to use the app to scan you had to have internet connection, and O2 had no 3G connection all weekend. Just irritating and penny-pinching. Just try looking a bit more generous Melvin - you'd be amazed at how much people would love you for it!

MaxwellT Good ol Gooma Yep. Downloaded the PDF of his clash finder to my phone and used it all weekend. Was brilliant. I did try out the app last week but it was terrible.
Latitude Attendee 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, 12 + probably forever.

After following cryptic tweets and word of mouth, I visited the merchandise stand on the Friday and finally got the QR code. But rather than just scan it, I took a sneaky picture of it as well :) I then tweeted it so others could make use of it. Ha. It turned out to be next to useless though as the code simply pointed you to a URL: http://mobileroadie.com/m/latitude/shows with the crappest list of stage times, not sorted by stage and without end times! The Gooma clashfinder was SO much better and I'm glad I printed half a dozen copies of that before I went :D

One epic gripe - there was talk that the programme would contain a barcode that gave you a clashfinder on your phone. Well, it didn't. Luckily, I had Goomas epic work on my phone as well, so the problems were averted.

I never did find the qr code in the programme (though didn't look too hard as I was rollin' with a Gooma Laminate Special) but surely some local caching of the times rather than a link to the page would be better? I never had a connection on site so couldn't have download the times if I'd wanted to.

When I picked my programme up the guy showed me the page where the app tag was and then slid the Contemporary Arts pamphlet in there as a placeholder. I never actually used it, despite downloading the app ahead of time though, as I had the book for fair weather and the laminated Gooma for the rain. But he did show me. Loved the programme once again by the way, and I've never seen better value for money for any other official festival guide. Looks happy on the bookshelf alongside the others (but is a bit damper than the rest, admittedly!)

I did see plenty of people doing similar with Gooma's guide. Should have asked a couple of people if they were off the forums or not!
