I agree Pulp would have been better as they were great at glastonbury. I'm pretty optimistic about Suede though, even though they were cack last time I saw them. But that was years ago

Am optimistic that now thats over, itll be great :)

Pulp presumably took the big money from Isle of Wight, Wireless and Reading (subs – please check they are playing Reading?). At least this is a festival exclusive, which we all claim is very dear to our hearts, right? Pulp were very charming and had some fine moments, but I’m not sure they quite scaled the heights Suede managed when they were on form. I think Pulp were more inclusive, whereas Suede were a bit daft really, so if you weren’t the type to commit to them, you might be a bit put off. I can’t imagine Grouchland listening to obvious choice Dog Man Star or b-sides like Killing of a Flashboy, My Insatiable One, To The Birds, High Rising and Europe is Our Playground on one of his interminable bus journeys and not finding falling for them. More generally, I struggle to imagine a forum that has been excited about Franz Ferdinand headlining and can even manage to look forward to The Cribs being quite so dismissive about Suede. Perhaps you had to be there. I know everyone thinks their own youth was exceptional (in a literal, not qualitative sense), but that was the last generation of decent big UK indie groups, it’s been quite a drop off since.

I understand it's against the grain on here, which was the point of the post. I wasn't intending to be dismissive of Pulp though, who were a fine group, just that Suede were more ambitious sonically and a bit more extreme, both of which meant they could end up looking pretty silly when it didn't work. The regard I mention isn't so unusual of course, even up to the recent Quietus and Pitchfork reviews. Basically, I like a pop group and wish you weren't all so beastly.

I'm not a huge suede fan, like, I know the main hits, but had never explored beyond them. So I downloaded their whole discography and came across a beautiful song called 'Still Life'. I think it's my favourite now. Check it out.

Love Pulp, and agree they would have been a bigger crowd-pleaser than Suede, but I can totally see where Nico is coming from. Dog Man Star as a piece of work is sonically so way above anything that Pulp ever recorded. A couple of people above have singled out Still Life; I, mean just listen to it - what an album ending that is - totally overblown, but all the more glorious for it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS2jjjmkGw4

i had a wee listen to dog man star earlier and it sounded better than i gave them credit for, obviously i'm a big fan of melodramatic popular songs as i was brought up listening to wild beasts, patrick wolf and american idiot era green day. found myself getting more into it as it went along, nico is probably correct that it's the kind of thing i'd listen to on the bus but mostly i just spend my days sitting around the house on the laptop these days. not sure claims that have since been edited out that 'they pushed it to the sonic limits' or whatever are correct though, reminds me of the recent round of lady gaga interviews where she goes on about all these industrial influences and pushing pop music as far as it will go when really it's JUST GREAT POP MUSIC. also, the recent the quietus articles on suede have mostly consisted of luke slater writing about how much of a fop he was in his teens

In session nd talking right now with LaLa on 6Music. I still don't like them in any respect, but some of you guys will love this. They're playing a stripped down version of 'Trashed' at the moment.

Not entirely on track with the thread but... Suede and Eels being Sunday headliners? Man, never before has two bookings of this importance ever offered me so little.. i have NO idea who to choose, neither excite me, in any form /: I know, i know, i'm sorry i'm a bit too young for these bands, i enjoyed Vampire weekend and Gossip as sunday upbeat stuff, this for me, is a bit too solemn and mellow for me...

Eels isn't a 'heritage' act you know eddy :) Go and see Crystal Fighters instead, they look brilliant fun. Xtatic Truth kicks in after about a minute and will be terrific up at the Sunrise :)

I have seen Suede quite a few times over the years, and they never fail to please. Brett is a great front man, and they have a great back catalogue now. Based on their recent tour, I would guess it will be very much focussed on their first three albums. Dog Man Star is easily their best album, as I'm sure all Suede fans would agree, but on Sunday I would bet on them playing loads from Comming Up since it has their best known hits (Trash, Beautiful Ones, Lazy, Film Star, etc) so will be more of a crowd pleaser. Eddy- you have given us lot's of good advice over the last couple of years, so let me return the favour. On sunday night, knock back a few ciders, get yourself over to Obelisk, and finish of your weekend with a bit of good old fashioned singalong britpop. If you don't like the music, at least you can have a laugh at the old farts like me trying out their best "dad dance" moves!

thanks Raffles :) Well, what i think i'll do is, go watch Crystal fighters then catch the end of Suede, that 'trash' song is actually pretty good, plus i recognise it, will go along with an open mind and have a shuffle. Gotta be sober Sunday so no wild arm flinging though... will be driving home that night, dayum :P
