It seems a little harsh to give a year cut off for engagements. My engagement was certainly well over a year but that was mainly due to indecision on how, where and when rather than not intending to get around to it at all.

I'm 18 actually, nearly 19.
A year or more is actually really normal for engagements. My grandparents were engaged for 11 years. I actually don't know anyone who has got married within a year. We're still young so it's a good idea to try things out before making the big move. Besides we still need to get enough money together!
