THE OFFICIAL FILM THREAD - 29 August 2010 16:08
We don't talk about films enough on here.

I dunno about you guys but I'm quite into my movies as well as my music n books n tings SO LETS FREAKIN TALK ABOUT THEM.

I think I'll just use this thread to mention a film I've just watched, maybe you could do the same too?

This lunchtime I have just watched Francois Truffaut's 1962 classic Jules et Jim, it just so happens to be one of my favourite films ever and at least a 9/10.

This evening I am going to watch Scott Pilgrim vs the World at the cinema. I like Michael Cera as he is a babe, and Edgar Wright has good previous form too so I enter with high hopes indeed.

WOT R U WATCHINGS????????

Last film I watched was forum stalwart Thomas favourite 10 Things I Hate About You, at about 3 this morning round my bezzie mate's house.
Before that it was probably Orange County, I like this film a lot.
Next film I will see in the cinema is also Scott Pilgrim Vs The World.

DAMMIT!!!

I was gonna start a movie thread yesterday. Curse my laziness!!!

Anyways, being a Cineworld unlimited card holder, i see alot of flicks. Unfortunately, being a cineworld unlimited cardholder who lives in milton keynes, it means what i see is usually a load of old dross.

BUT.....yesterday i saw Scott Pilgrim vs The World. It wasnt as good as i thought it would be in my mind. There was a LOT of nice touches (snippits of game sound effects. A seinfeld spoof. 'Spaced' style editing...). And Michael Cera is brilliant, and has been since Arrested Development. But the overall package was slightly overlong. BUT...id STILL reccomend this flick to all & soundry. 8/10.

I also saw Salt. Which, for a popcorn, brain candy, arcitypal spy movie, was quite good. 6.5/10.

I don't really watch films. The last new film I watched was Avatar. It wasn't very good. The last really good film I watched was Synechdoche (sp?) New York. It was really good.

Yeah Synedoche New York was amazing. I'm a big fan of Charlie Kaufman's work in general, Adaptation probably being my favourite.

Avatar has no appeal to me at all, doubt I'll ever watch it.

It looks amazing but gives you a headache after a bit from wearing the goggles and the storyline is bollocks.

I should really go to the cinema more but it's sooo expensive.

Yeah I go through phases with the cinema, tonight will be my third time in a month, but then I could easily go 6 months without going at all. I think I've been going a bit more recently due to the fact there's been no gigs since Latitude.

I buy a lot of stuff on dvd though as they're so cheap these days. I rarely pay more than about 3 quid either as Amazon Marketplace and places like Cash Converters are amazing for getting good stuff dirt cheap if you're prepared to wait a few months.

Re:THE OFFICIAL FILM THREAD - 29 August 2010 21:57
My old arse used to live on the cinema pews, but I've lapsed - I did see a really good play in St Paul’ church the other day...

Yeah, well, my recommendation is Neighbor by Robert Angelo Masciantonio. This young writer/director is a good friend of my wife's, and - if you buy the DVD - you'll discover that the eminent Dr Moochoo provides the audio commentary. Unfortunately, Rob has throat cancer, and needs people to buy the film to fund his treatment - Obama insurance or no Obama insurance.

It's an interesting one, and an example of the torture porn genre (made popular by guff like Hostel): the most effective scene comes as the sexy young torturess sticks a skewer into the hapless hero's penis, then uses it to mount him (sexually rather than beside a butterfly). Many on IMDB have described it as the worst film they've ever seen - and a guy in the cinema (where we first saw it) described to the mortified producer (another friend, now) as “Funny Games for morons." It's actually good, though - if not for the squeamish - and is simultaneously funny, gory and thought-provoking. Only available to order online, I believe (certainly not in the shops over here).
The trailer (not that it gives a great impression): [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAt1coXjwyQ</a></font>]http://www.youtube.com/wa...lt;/a></font>

An easier one to get in your mitts, which I saw last week – due to it being a couple of oysters in HMV, is Tony: London Serial Killer - a very low-key oddity about a geeky loner, desperate to fit it in with Sowerby’s of this world, who just snaps. Great acting and an interesting character portrait! The sort of serial killer one just wants to cuddle, and caress. The trailer: " rel=nofollow target=_blank>[link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa5LrbGOXws</a></font>]http://www.youtube.com/wa...lt;/a></font>

By the way, I went to see Avatar when it came out (following Dr M's orders). It's more interesting than your average (chip-off-the-old) blockbuster, and it was nice to look cool for a couple of hours thanks to the groovy 3D specs. It is, however, a bit of a waste of Blu-tack. Nothing to email home about.

I'm done with ya.

Moochoo is no more! Now (rising from the ashes, like a fiery phoenix, and regenerated, as unlike Doctor Who as possible) comes Mr Moochoo. http://www.last.fm/user/MrMoochoo31

SO YEAH SCOTT PILGRIM

It was great fun, I really enjoyed it. Was slightly different to what I expected though so for the first ten minutes or so I was slightly unsure. I wasn't even certain that I liked Scott at first as at the beginning he's a bit too cocky and stuff but I think that's more to show the affect Ramona has on him as soon as she arrives and turns him into the bumbling geek Cera that we all know, love and expect.

Might have to get the graphic novels now, I've never read one before though so this will be quite a big step, I think it's one I can make though.

My missus keeps trying to force the 'graphic novels' on me too. But i too set in my ways & feel like i finished reading comics about 20 years ago. Call be a luddite....

As for Avatar.....Visually its undeniably stunning (in 2D as well as 3D). Unfortunately, the 'story' make normal brains melt into nonsensical mush. So i will never watch it again.

I watched Tony: London Serial Killer today and really enjoyed it, thanks for the tip Moochoo.

I liked how it just kinda dipped into his life, didn't really explain a lot, just showed him going about his business and that was that. I think he's the kind of character that we all know a person like, but consider them harmless and take the micky out of and stuff, little did we know they could stick a bag over our head or strangle us with the tv cable.

ENJOYABLE STUFF.

The Squid and the Whale is quite possibly my favourite film of all time.

Not a lot of other people seem to love it the way I do, most people seem to just QUITE LIKE IT but I find it pretty perfect.

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK BEEROSE, I HOPE YOU LOVE IT.

Re:THE OFFICIAL FILM THREAD - 30 August 2010 21:40
I absolutely detested The Squid and the Whale.

Which is odd, as I am a bit of a Wes Anderson fanboy and he produced it and Noam thingy that wrote it co-wrote some of his stuff, including the career high Fantastic Mr Fox (I'm not kidding). I loved Woody Allen's New York stuff too (obviously) and a lot of people said this had a similar, albeit contemporary, feel.

All the criticism people make Anderson's films, that I never agree with, I felt about TSATW. I understand it was apparently autobiographical, but I found it contrived.  Cold, boring and sneery. The characters didn't gel and seemed like ciphers.

It looked nice though. Maybe I just caught it on a bad day.

Have you seen Greenberg, Maddix?

No not seen Greenberg yet, have you? I absolutely adore The Squid and the Whale, especially the father character even though I think you're really meant to hate him a bit.

Margot at the Wedding is another nice Baumbach one and the moment where I realised I actually like Jack Black (I always thought I hated him but then I realised hes great in that, as well as High Fidelity obv, so I went and watched School of Rock and enjoyed that too, became a right Black bumboy tbh).

Re:THE OFFICIAL FILM THREAD - 30 August 2010 21:54
I have to say I found it [TSATW] slightly boring in the same way a lot of these post-Wes Anderson indie dramas are.
He is my film-making idol but I think he has inspired a lot of bland films styled in a pretentious way.

What's that other one where the guy meets the girl working in the shoe shop?

Yeah that's the one, I enjoyed that more than the Squid and the Whale. Don't get me wrong, navel gazing indie films are totally my thing but I still think a lot of them are lacking something.

The mid 00s era of them all are probably my favourite, I think it's the post Juno (a film I did like a lot) world that has been a lot worse. Stuff like 500 Days of Summer were really poor I thought.

Any of you guys into the mumblecore genre? Some really cool stuff there, especially by the Duplass brothers. Check out THE PUFFY CHAIR, it's LOVELY.

I am! But I haven't seen that many of them due to the fact they don't appear in my local HMV or on torrents very much.
I loved Mutual Appreciation, probably the hipsterest film ever made.

dont really go to the cinemas very much, our local multiplex shows filums fit for only 9 year olds, and the closest art house is in the center of manchester, and too cool for the likes of me and mrs hoppo...so i have to watch films off the telly, which means i dont watch very many at all...
but saw a cracker the other day. In Bruges it was called, a kind of black comedy, but bleaker than the bleakest bits of Samuel Beckett...still laugh out loud funny though.

I've still not gotten round to watching In Bruges despite wanting to and hearing from loads of people that it is brilliant and it being on tv the other day and it being dead cheap in all the shops for the past year.

Even better post, that.

brilliant is a strong and over used word, but it is pretty good, in bruges that is, not the word brilliant...but try and see it mr maddix, because apart from keeping me glued to the screen for 90 or so minutes, it really made me want to visit Bruges, which is something i have never thought about before...Belgium...whats that

Watched TSATW today, really enjoyed it, I thought the characters had a lot of depth and although the plot was quite understated it kept my attention throughout. Soundtrack worked well too. Will probably keep an eye out for the film in HMV etc, maybe when I hit up N-town this weekend.

I was thinking of heading over to Norwich as well sometime in the next week. Could you wait until Monday (unless you're with a load of mates)?

Man On Wire is on the Discovery Channel tonight. It's good, you should watch it. I got a free rental with some Magic Stars so I'll probably get Four Lions out tomorrow as well.

I'm watching A Knight's Tale and Heath Ledger has just ridden a horse into a church.

Maybes g-land, maybes, Norwich is a mission for me though. I'm up for the weekend with relatives and I'll be going home on Monday, I could take a detour into the town centre if it was for a LATITUDE FORUM MEET UP though.

Sadly not in Jersey I already checked. I am thinking about starting my own up but again venues are a nightmare here and I don’t know if there will be much interest. In an island 9x5 people aren’t that open to new things
Got a few friends in the mainland and I do really want to go over to check a real game out before really starting something anyway. At the moment I'm still trying to master skating backwards...
