Watched The American the other night. Pants. Totally. But not as bad as the awful Drive or the impossibly awful Limits of Control; 3 films that share a certain theme/feeling... as well as all being a big pile of pants. Do we still say "pants" btw? It's not a word I've used in this context much.

I saw Twilight yesterday. It's the first time I've seen/read/heard anything connected to this phenomenon. Hilarious. Didn't realise Kristin Stewart from Into The Wild was in it. I'm so out of touch with teenage stuff, it's amazing how that just happens to you, never thought it would once upon a time. Apparently there are loads of these films? Blimey. *Oh, meant to add - Iron&Wine and Thom Yorke eh? Ha, nice.

Hmm) Blitz (Jason Statham being brilliant, great stuff) Severance (didn't want to like it but I did) Blood Night (average slasher, great boobs) Malice in Wonderland (terrible) My Bloody Valentine 3d (terrible) Upside Down The Creation Records Story (v good) The Bourne Identity (overrated) Gran Torino (Great, Clint is such a hero)

can't remember what i've seen since my last post but some stuff that's remained in memory: Zombieland - brilliant Mars Attacks - lets be serious, brilliant Johnny English ONE - lets be serious, this is also brilliant, didn't have the same magic as when i was 8 though. Fish Called Wanda - decent Dragnet - loved this. had some of the best one liners i've heard in it

Isn't anyone watching any good films? I wouldn't bother with any of maddix or tintin's selection (except the Bourne, which I do like), and 'My Bloody Valentine 3D'?!... please tell me that's a MBV concert movie and not some schlocky horror nonsense!

Even though it's a bit of a one-trick pony, I still think about Super from time to time (especially when someone jumps a queue).

tintin Roger you have to see Zombieland http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/zombieland/ I might give it a go, it sounds, ehm, 'interesting', and it's definitely isn't the usual sort of thing I see often (unless it's directed by a leftist lesbian from Laos?), plus it's only short. I'll download it and get a bottle of wine (not in that order).

The way forward would seem to be to watch small portions of a perennially popular film on a loop for as many times as your download limit will allow. Works for my girls. "They've got lumps of it 'round the back" Found 'Kein Ohr Hasen' quite entertaining, but perhaps not one to watch with folk of another generation, causes blushing. Not as fab as Goodbye Lenin, but some funny moments. Always good to return to Cinema Paradiso, Volver (geddit) & My Life As A Dog. Anyone seen Tintin (nice to have a movie named after one, dontcha think)? Our 'proper' cinema's closed ATM, so a bit starved.

I've been watching a film for the last 3 days... frame by frame... all 142,832 of 'em! I'm trying my hand at subtitling (another new career avenue opens up) - just placing the subtitles rather than actually translating it, that was done by the person whom I have breakfast with every day - so I been going through a film from Argentina, it's in Spanish or course, adding Polish subtitles at exactly the right moment: Spanish & Polish, 2 languages that I don't speak (luckily I have the English subtitled version to give me a clue or 2!). I've just finished, it'll go to the lab on Monday to have the subtitles put on the prints, before it opens a film festival in 2 weeks and then goes on general release in the new year... and I'm so so tempted to insert a few hidden messages... but I probably shouldn't... Btw, it's a film called 'Abrir Puertas Y Ventanas', or 'Back to Stay' to give it the UK title, and I absolutely recommend it. It's won some good awards this year and it's a lovely film - basically about the relationships between 3 sisters living together in their old family home, and taking place entirely with the house/garden - if you find it anywhere I suggest you watch it (nice bit of Vashti Bunyan on the soundtrack too). For my next trick: having a go at designing the poster.

Went to see THE FUTURE at Cinema City on Sat night, the new film from Miranda July who did one of my faves - Me You and Everyone we Know. IT WAS GREAT. Also since my last post I have watched... The White Ribbon (not my favourite Haneke but still good) The Bank Job (average) The Bourne Supremacy (still an overrated series) The Contract (straight to dvd and there's a reason for it. Morgan Freeman and John Cusack both consistently good as always though just a shame about the plot)

Christmas is a great time to watch loads of movies. Here's what I've seen since my last update... Uzak - (Alright) Zodiac - (overrated, it's decent but lacks Fincher magic) Bruno - (throwaway) Blue Valentine - (very good) The Lives of Others (overrated, beautiful but hardly one of the greatest films of recent years it's made out to be) Lars and the Real Girl - (a rewatch, still have the same thoughts really, good but doesn't live up to its potential) Terminator 2 Judgement Day (CLASSIC) A Serious Man - (don't understand the mixed reviews for this one, Coens reliably excellent as always) Senna - (amazing, a must see) Moon - (maybe not quite as good as I was made out to believe but one hell of a performance from Sam Rockwell)

Saw The Artist last night. Despite the hype, it is an excellent film, the lead and the dog both being quite mesmerising. Not many films give you the full experience; the old silents they used to show when I was little (I'm not in my nineties, but you did get to see them sometimes as a B movie - please can someone bring B movies back? - or on tv on a Sunday afternoon) often had an amazing quality that sound somehow slightly negates. Not all hammy acting & lingering looks. Anywho, definitely worth the ticket price, will be on the birthday list later in the year.

Seen loads of films recently - at least 1 day for the last few weeks, up to 3 a day sometimes - I was gonna do a Maddix-style rundown of 'em all but I've forgotten what they were! I've mostly been watching Spanish films (some new releases, some not yet released), but I have seen a few mainstream films too ('The Help' yesterday, actually not that bad, it surprised me). And in other movie related news, I'm off to the Berlin Film Festival tomorrow, I'm kinda the 'plus one' for the missus, she's got to be there because she's a distributor/festival programmer, I'm just going to... do even less than usual, but this time in Germany, and for free.

Coincidentally, I recently took a course in Spanish cinema so I've been watching a lot of Spanish films too. Not related to the Spanish films, I am currently working my way through a box set of Werner Herzog documentaries. For some reason I find Werner Herzog's voice so pleasing to listen to, I think that if he and Adam Curtis teamed up to create a documentary they could convince me to believe just about anything. That's a bit of a scary thought really.
It's quite interesting, you know, the number of biscuits that are named after revolutionaries. You've got your Garibaldi, of course, you've got your Bourbons, then of course you've got your Peek Frean's Trotsky Assortment.
