Song of the week? 04 August 2010 21:58 (permalink)
No, I don't know why I bother either.

Please (Maddix, Grouchland, Thomas, biteOrca and Nico et al) don't ignore this - leaving me looking like a stupendously stinky stick, again.

Yes, I tried, but Album of the Week/Fortnight essentially flopped. How about a shorter version: song of the week?

It's so simple that even the aforementioned forumers are capable of it: notify me of your interest here, and we'll take it in turns to recommend a song (ideally in a format - Youtube, for example - that everyone can access). Type a few syllables in description - avoid boohad crepsy woop, where possible - if you can muster the mind power (but this is optional). Finally, others post comments in response. It's simpler than Maddix's hat-selection policy.

I'll go first tomorrow; I'll make it a nice dancey number too.

It'll take mere minutes of your worthless lives.

Don't let me down.

Thus far, you're running in this order:

Mr Mechoo
Nico
Thomas
Maddix
Biteorca
Beerose
Grouchland
phht (assuming she comments on other's recommendations)
Hoppo
Riverlodge
Giddy

In order to avoid past problems, I'll prompt each of you via a private message just prior to your turn on stage.

Moochoo is no more! Now (rising from the ashes, like a fiery phoenix, and regenerated, as unlike Doctor Who as possible) comes Mr Moochoo. http://www.last.fm/user/MrMoochoo31

Sod it, I'll post my recommendation now.

So as to get yeh all dancin' Travolta stylee, I'll avoid anything too obscure this week. If you've heard it before, hear it again - and lend me yeh words. Yank the volume up too.

            [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7D9aoq6wfc</a></font>]http://www.youtube.com/wa...lt;/a></font>

Buried deep within the pernicious "Penis Envy", deep within the career of punk/post-punk's finest exports, rampages a song which marries unrivalled intellectual ingenuity with manic musical ferocity like few others. I'd follow it as a deity, if I didn't fear Crass' wrath.

Yes, it's "Where next, Columbus?" by Crass. First caressing – and then bitch-slapping – my ears whilst I was at university, this song probably had a more profound effect on me than Mrs Moochoo's ankles

I won't type anymore – largely because real life is starting to kick-in – except to remind one and all that it was recently covered by Jeffrey Lewis; here are the lyrics to ponder.

Buckle-up yeh toes, you're in for one hell of a rocket ride:

            Where Next, Columbus?

            Another's hope, another's game
            Another's loss, another's gain
            Another's lies, another's truth
            Another's doubt, another's proof
            Another's left, another's right
            Another's peace, another's fight
            Another's name, another's aim
            Another's fall, another's fame
            Another's pride, another's shame
            Another's love, another's pain
            Another's hope, another's game
            Another's loss, another's gain
            Another's lies, another's truth
            Another's doubt, another's proof
            Another's left, another's right
            Another's peace, another's fight

Marx had an idea from the confusion of his head
Then there were a thousand more waiting to be led
The books are sold, the quotes are bought
You learn them well and then you're caught

            Another's left, another's right
            Another's peace, another's fight

Mussolini had ideas from the confusion of his heart
Then there were a thousand more waiting to play their part
The stage was set, the costumes worn
And another empire of destruction born

            Another's name, another's aim
            Another's fall, another's fame

Jung had an idea from the confusion of his dream
Then there were a thousand more waiting to be seen
You're not yourself, the theory says
But I can help, your complex pays

            Another's hope, another's game
            Another's loss, another's gain

Sartre had an idea from the confusion of his brain
Then there were a thousand more indulging in his pain
Revelling in isolation and existential choice
Can you truly be alone when you use another's voice?

            Anothers' lies, another's truth
            Another's doubt, another's proof

The idea born in someone's mind
Is nurtured by a thousand blind
            Anonymous beings, vacuous souls
Do you fear the confusion, your lack of control?
You lift your arm to write a name
So caught up in the identity game
Who do you see? Who do you watch?
Who's your leader? Which is your flock?
Who do you watch? Who do you watch?
Who's your leader? Which is your flock?

Einstein had an idea from the confusion of his knowledge
Then there were a thousand more turning to advantage
They realised that their god was dead
So they reclaimed power through the bomb instead
            Anothers code, anothers brain
They'll shower us all in deadly rain

Jesus had an idea from the confusion of his soul
Then there were a thousand more waiting to take control
The guilt is sold, forgiveness bought
The cross is there as your reward
            Another's love, another's pain
            Another's pride, another's shame
Do you watch at a distance from the side you have chosen?
Whose answers serve you best? Who'll save you from confusion?
Who will leave you an exit and a comfortable cover
Who will take you oh so near the edge, but never drop you over?
Who do you watch? Who do you watch? Who do you watch?

Yes, Mr Orca, once you've wrenched yourself away from your obscene cartoon, just post a comment. Then, in accordance with the rota above, recommend a wee number. I'll alert you when it's your turn; it'll be about three weeks. However, we may move more quickly if everyone's prompt.

The weekly idea sounds excessive for single songs, but people really struggled to respond in the past. Maybe the one-track format will remedy that. We’ll see.

                          Certainly, anytime you like.

The answer, dear Bite, is that I'm not - contrary to Nico's deepest desires - running a communist dictatorship. They all need to express an interest; I will welcome them with open keyboards.

Yes, Beerose - whose recent posts must make her the most-improved forumer (that's very patronising, isn't it?) - should sign-up. Have already pleaded with Grouchland and this Karen bloke, whoever he is, should also show us what he's got. The others too. What a family we would make

I had typed a much snarkier response along the same lines, so I'm glad the Moo beat me to it and was somewhat gentler.

So, has anyone listened to the actual song?

I will give it a go as soon as this David Bowie album finishes.

Communism would have been much better if Moochoo was in charge.

The Levellers would be in for a bit of a shock. Talk about crustie turkeys voting for a glorious egalitarian Christmas.

Moochoo is no more! Now (rising from the ashes, like a fiery phoenix, and regenerated, as unlike Doctor Who as possible) comes Mr Moochoo. http://www.last.fm/user/MrMoochoo31

Hope that wasn't going to be directed at me Nico.
I assumed I hadn't been included because of Moochoo's MISOGYNISTIC WAYS but yes I think I will have a go at this although it won't produce anything groundbreaking.

I listened once, but was interuppted by R. Stevie Moore and CocoRosie's lush tones (they must battle it out for me to choose which will be 'song of the week')
