The whole record is great. They are a kind of cross between Godspeed You! Black Emperor and The Residents - who I'm just getting into at the moment. Am busy for the rest of the day, so you'll have to amuse yourselves. Great song, great record. Thanks, Thomas. 9/10

Can I join the rota for this, Mr M? I've not yet had chance to listen to the recommendations made so far but I will soon. Based on the comments offered so far, I'm really intrigued.

i'm a bit behind everyone else , but think thats because this excellent thread (advertised as *song for the week* don't forget, rather than *three songs every five days*) seems to be moving more at grouchland rather than maddix tempo, and cos i'm a bit slow. anyway nico's saint etienne song. i have heard it before about three times, but only ever got to a couple of minutes in, so thats been enlightening. I can't decide whether it's very clever (a phrase I habitually use in mock praise if i don't really *get* something) or simply a set of samples thrown together to post off for jose padilla to create some chill mixes from. i suspect that it is very clever though, cos they probably wouldnt have made the effort to generate nine minutes worth of sound material and to do all those accompanying arty shots in the video with the sixties/fifties feel to them that seem to overtly support nico's journey concept. i just am left with an overall impression of someone trying to be too clever by half, working really hard to create an impression of casual wistful simplicity and for some reason that grates. beach house do that a bit (i'm not saying they are like saint etienne) but by contrast they seem pretty earnest in trying to do what they do. or maybe i'm simply simple. btw a few people are doing scores, is that standard form?

I don't care for scores these days.

grouchland I don't care for scores these days. That's a very open-minded and free-thinking attitude to have. 9 out of 10 for that.

Scoring reviews is a sign of a phallocentric mind, apparently.

The only time it's acceptable to give scores is in the special cases of 0/10 and 10/10

I'll just start with Thomas' song. Quite enjoying this, musically. Like Moochoo said it reminds me somewhat of GSY!BE but also of something Nick Cave might do- piano, rolling drums (or whatever you call it, I did fail music GCSE). The vocals are grating on me a little though. I'm not against spoken word style vocals (being a fan of Arab Strap and all) but something about the accent and deliver is making me enjoy it less. I'm not into giving scores (lack of phallocentric mind perhaps) but I probably wouldn't listen to them again based on this song.
This is relevant to my interests.

MOOCHOO PICK - I've never really listened to Crass but I enjoyed this so will check them out for sure at some point. NICE1 7.5/10 NICO PICK - I've never really listened to Saint Etienne but I found this pretty dull so will never check them out again. BAD1 4/10 THOMAS PICK - NEVER HEARD OF BAND BEFORE. I LIKED THIS. BEST OF THE LOT SO FAR. 8/10

maddix is by far the most succinct (and potentially phallocentric) so i think i will learn from this.

Giddy's now in the gang. So, tonight proffers an opportunity for musical slackers to reset their clocks on these three tracks; I'll be advising the malevolent Maddix85 to rev-up his stereo in preparation for tomorrow evening - when, I hope, he'll present song number four. Whilst the pace is steeper than anticipated, I'm really pleased with everyone's response - all three songs have received good/interesting reviews and prompted some discussion. I'll monitor the pace as we go into future rounds, but think it's working thus far - perhaps even Grouchland will be satisfied. By the way, I'm perusing Country Teasers back catalogue as we breathe. The recommended song is great, but there's plenty of others in their shopping cart to match it. You've put me onto a potential Moochoo-favourite here, Thomas - how much do I owe you (and do you except payment in sherbet dabs?

Mr Moochoo ...perhaps even Grouchland will be satisfied. I don't think you need worry, Mr M. Seems to me that grouchland's been pretty quiet since his encounter with 'Eat It Up Worms Hero'. I'll post my song reviews tomorrow evening.

And just who do you think you are, Grouchland? A few people are yet to comment (Beerose, Riverlodge - I believe, Giddy and others). A day's break won't do any harm. It's a marathon not a squint.
