Do you want to go to Harvest At Jimmy's? Your absolute fave is headlining.

Oh I know, and it's close to where I live too, but £85 is a bit steep for that lineup. Considering it though.

It's gutting because imagine all the decent acts they could get for the same money as they spend on SFG etc. Who headlined last year? It wasn't anyone good was it?

Blue Nile by Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cp2IURXzSqA
http://open.spotify.com/t../462gtQqPNtSLA7OoKpNDCo

The Heliocentrics are a self-proclaimed 'psych jazz' group and Mulatu Astatke is the self-proclaimed 'ethio-jazz' inventor. Last year they were both invited to collaborate on number 3 in Strut Records' fabulous Inspiration Information series which has also seen appearances from the likes of Horance Andy and Tony Allen.

Blue Nile opens with scorched guitar arpeggios for a brief few bars, before Mulatu's piano and drums straight from the text-book that was written by The James Brown Band. Throughout the three minutes and twelve seconds that make up this track, the guitar line meanders like the eponymous river and strings pulsate like the locusts that occupy it's banks. As we continue our journey we are joined by all manner of synths, horns and harps, whose starlit twinkling welcome us back to the shores as the track finishes.

pretty good call grouch/tiang thing....pretty much the worse ever mulatu track i have listened to, but that means its still pretty great; the backing band sound like tortoise on a bad day, still, still, still, it is still insufferably catchy...

for the real mulatu vibe you are all gonna have to wait for ma CD...got a belter lined up...

nice one

My favourite Mulatu is probably The Way To Nice from Mulatu Steps Ahead. Sounds like the kind of thing that would soundtrack James Bond if it was made in a distant jungle.

OK.
I read on the video descrip that it was based around samples (mmmmm) and that made me go mmmmm, seeing as I love The Go! Team, Girl Talk, The Avalanches, and have a fondness for Department of Eagles and The Bran Flakes, SO...
I listened again, and it was easier on the ears, and a tad more interesting than the first listen. It coulda been a bit 'fuller', with more orchestration maybe, but, the horns ARE LUSH AS F*CK, and the vocalist is nice too, SO...

BITTEORCA'S PICK - I like Ariel very much anyway and Scared Famous used to be my favourite album of his until his recent wonderful new one arrived on the scene, so a song from that album will always be a winner to me. BEST SONG OF THE WEEK SO FAR, WELL DONE XXX. 8.9/10

BEEROSE'S PICK - Nice song but I just can't imagine myself ever listening to it again. Whilst it was on it was fine and I was tapping my foot and stuff but it didn't make me want to download more or listen again or owt. 6.3/10

GROUCHLAND'S PICK - First listen I was a little underwhelmed but it slowly works its way in and I really like it now. Will probably check out an album or something by these guys at some point. 7.5/10

Not sure if anyone listened to Bill Drummond on 6Music this lunchtime but if not worth listening to again online.  Anyway he picked this as his final track  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2xODjbfYw8.  An oldie but as Mr Drummond states possibly one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

really cannot understand why any one would get excited at scouting for girls doing common people; william shatner's version is so superior in every way.

got a bit behind' ben working away and not really back. only listened on a ****ty netbook.

beerose: koop - sounded like i should like it, and yet i pick up moochoo's icy tones. probably too cool for me but i get the quality. neat video but i wanted james caan to walk in dressed to the nines and then machine gun the lot of em. thats my problem and i no doubt will get over it.

triangle: mulatu astake - love it, i'm a sucker for a killer piano tinkle and this has them in spades and each time as dry and sharp as neat voddy on the rocks.
don't you wonder sometimes
'bout sound and vision

A touch inconsequential, albeit with plenty of body, Blue Nile - I'm discounting the second pick - is a pleasant way in which to jettison three minutes and thirteen seconds of one’s life.

My left ear neared the finish line yearning for a more substantial prize; I actually preferred it the first time around.

I like the guitar. Nice and atmospheric.

Moochoo's wish is my command, so jumping the queue as phht's at leeds fest..

so friends, forgive an old mans taste for nostalgia, my tune is a lovely little ditty that i bought more or less when it came out at the arse-end of the 70's, before the thatcher regime took power...
listening to it today, it makes me long for those endless summers of teenage years, and all the hopes and aspirations that were yet to be dashed  agains the rocks of adulthood
hope you will like this beautiful little song as much as i do, and that it helps you all get through those difficult times in your lives, when only things like this make life seem worth living

Thanks for that DNA single Hoppo-simply amazing.  But alas, I now feel that it is time for me to leave the Latitude forum after maybe only 3 or 4 posts (better this than 5000 plus posts I feel).  The forum has become too vitriolic to the outsider and too anal generally; music does not exist in a vacuum and making top 10 album lists is the anthesis of what music is about.  If I met another forum member coming the other way I would probably cross the road for fear they would engage me in a conversation about their favourite Tangerine Dream album or their top 10 Grouchland rape jokes.  I fear that this too shall become my fate-a social pariah existing only via the outlet of some online fraternity.  Hence, I am leaving my job to travel round Eastern Europe by train.  I shall visit Hungary, Slovenia, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Rep, Latvia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herz and Bulgaria armed only with some Werner Herzog movies on my laptop and the entire Misty in Roots back catalogue on my Ipod.  Oh, and a few books by Noam Chomsky-think I am going to start with 'Failed States' and take it from there.  I bid you all farewell.

what a shame this hollyoaks fan is quitting the forum...what larks could we have had discussing whether mr chomsky is the only voice of sanity in the wilderness, or just some old cranky nutter who should go back to studying childhood linguists  ?

Re:Song of the week?/? - 31 August 2010 15:36
You know, when Hoppo took over the reigns from his beloved daughter, I believed him to be guaranteed box office - like Mumford and Sons faced with a bunch of Latitude losers.

Thus, I sat back, waiting for others' reviews.

What in the name of Beyonce’s worst song (pretty desperate stuff) went wrong?

The DNA's song is super - a fantastically floundering feast of fukked-up feedback and distortion, replete with an orgasmic base-throb. As to what they're banging on about I've no idea, but I'm sure it's as hot as hell’s most fiery flames.

8.3/10 (for song recommended by a man who - like The Wire - bemoans the hierarchical system of grading music, but is perfectly happy compiling hierarchical lists).

Please review this song to save this thread's soul, and the deposed phht's whilst you're at it.

So, the Maddixs, Nicos and Thomasssssssss who welcomed this thread with open joysticks are prepared to let it rot are they?

Come on, lovers, give old Hoppo his first thrill in decades by reviewing his song, so his daughter can succeed him - as is the natural order.

It's a good song too.

I don't think I've ever listened to anything by DNA before.

I liked YOU AND YOU BY DNA.

Quite a lot in fact.

Especially the guitars.
