Yo BeeRose. When you reviewed my incredible CD you said it might become your default 'getting ready to go out' album. Since then you seem to post almost daily about the incredible things you got up to the night before. Can you confirm the connection?

I'm in Limbo.  Neither here nor there.  And it's quite frustrating. My mind is in several place and none, all at the same time.

I'm still in England but I'm going home on Thursday and since I got back from Leeds last week I've basically just been counting the days until I'm finally home, and packing and repacking my suitcases every day, it's all making me incredibly unfocused. it's been a bit Groundhog-y - wake up, nothing to do, do nothing, have a drink, do more nothing, feel un-concentrated, finish the bottle, go to bed.

Normal service will resume shortly.

There is almost definitely a connection. Also I've met like 3 DJs since listening to your CD and you used to DJ, did you get your unburned CD from like a mysterious old shop which wasn't there the next day and may have created some kind of voodoo connnection? Bit like the earrings in "The Hot Chick".

Proper excited about Nico's CD.

Re:Anyone Fancy Another CD Swap? - 06 September 2010 21:54
a lot of people seemed to have slagged Thomas' CD off...just given it a proper listen and its pretty good...mostly...

open Kinisool has some pretty cheesy vocals to be sure...but what a bass line...big, fat (phat ?) and funky...what more could you ask for.
Baader Meinhof ...well can i even go there...even dare criticise the sainted luke hains ? when we first played this, mrs hoppo commented that, yat another white boy wishing he was Prince...and indeed it does have a very stonge whiff of the purple one...no bad thing that though...and it all works pretty well...the last trake though, mister Luke Haines himself...dunno, did not scritti pollitti do this sort of thing better ? still not a bad bit of MCWB angst...
funny thing is i always got Momus confused with the King of Luxenburg...dunno why...but history of sexual jealousy sounds like the best track the PSB's never recorded...this is a good thing: its so very english in a way, and momus should most probably have a blue plaque on his forehead  as  a hidden bit of national heritage...
then it seems to go a bit down hill from here, first with Alize which seemed like french disco, which sounds good on paper...but a tadge dull...so i was nodding off when Nicky and the doves came  on which sounded equally dull, but woke me up by the end with some of the wildest keyboards since Emerson lake and Palmer in their heyday...pretty cool
not much need to comment upon 'What time is Love'
!!! no thanks...sounds like some rank thing from the 80's
like wise the long...oh so very long St Etienne instrumental...it was so not as good as they thought it was...good to play while having a nap though
same with the Ms Dynamite & Cassie tracks...gotta say was kinda loosing the will to live during these two...still, bound to still be popular in 20 years down the guilty pleasures disco'
but after this brief hiatus of lapse of taste, things start looking up again...Boy Better, is another with a fab bass line: the Juan Maclean, though i often wonder what they are for (i mean really ?) it works pretty well...and of course Wliey...oh wiley wiley wiley, though your names rhymes with kylie, you just cannot not mention shoreditch...pretty sweet in a nathan barley kind of way.

so that it...a great compilation from the man  Thomas

and a big 10/10 from me

You seem to be forgetting that these are in no ordinary case, but a special brightly coloured, weird shaped,  tacky Poundland case.

Roger, get yr reviews down.

I'll need to listen to them first.

But, I have actually started that task today, starting with 'The Clap', it's had 2 full spins for far and right now I'm revisiting the tracks I picked-out the first two times around.

Happy now?

Re:Anyone Fancy Another CD Swap? - 09 September 2010 17:04
I listened to MOZ's CD just now.

I liked the structure of Moz's CD, the interlude's helped break up each section nicely and kept it fresh. Skits like this are always a risk as it is a bit of a cliché, but these were nice enough and one of them made me do a Maddix trademark LOL. I thought each section had a little theme, which was nice too. Some were stronger than others.

Songs especially liked sponsored by The Like:

Hearing the Best Coast track out of context of the album made me realise what a good record it is. It's a lovely sound and a bit more muscular than is often claimed by their/her detractors. The Freelance Whales I also liked. It reminded me a bit of The Acorn, who I like. The Bird & The Bee track completed a winning opening salvo.

Sleater Kinney I used to really like, never really listen to these days, but an enjoyable reminder. McLusky are obviously excellent. The Sleigh Bells track is pretty ace too, I like them as a singles band, not sure about the whole album, though only listened to it all the way through once. FCGT I also enjoyed.

Moaning section sponsored by Moochoo

The Marvin Green and Al Green songs are obviously classics, but slightly obvious choices and it seemed a bit of a tokenist way of breaking up the indie.

A friend of mine who is too scared of hoppo to go on the internet got me to download that The Aloof track the other month so I listened to it and then refused to post it to him as it was so boring.

An ex of Nico Ri/j/j/inders used to love Six by Seven. Their fans go on as if their lack of profile or acclaim was some kind of terrible oversight, but really they are the archetypal meat and potato house band for a certain kind of proficient 90's indie lifestyle soundtrack. It was nice to have a Proustian affirmation of my decision to have a massively horrific breakup in 2003 though.

The Crocketts song was rubbish. I hate it when you can hear acoustic guitar while they're all rocking out (apart from, like, Neil Young and actually loads of things I probably like). It was like something off Hollyoaks.

That Prolapse song was the only thing I skipped (I was making scrambled eggs during The Crocketts) I see what they're doing, it might have worked if the insults had been especially inventive or funny. Perhaps I have missed the point.

Thought it tailed off a bit towards the end, Cooper Temple Clause were always boring.

Conclusion

Although Moz used the whole 80 minute CD capacity, this never dragged and flowed very nicely, albeit I preferred the stuff in the first half. If I worked for Milton Keynes council in some kind of Soviet capacity I would happily appoint Moz to do a Sunday afternoon "nice indie, a bit of lols and other stuff" radio show. I wouldn't listen to it though, being a Soviet Council appointing type I would either be with my family on my boat by the lake or with my mistress or something.

What I did next

I am literally listening to Maddix85's CD now. So far I don't think there has been any indie pop at all, it is all excellent African pop or trademark Maddix discordant indie, so I don't know what you're all on about.

Re:Anyone Fancy Another CD Swap? - 09 September 2010 18:36
The biggest compliment I can pay Maddix is that his CDs are like listening to Peel on an undistinguished week night in 1984 or 1992. Albeit a week with mysteriously no reggae or metal releases and no European novelty acts. The occasional gem that sees one lurching for a pen (I know this wouldn't happen these days), a fair bit of inventive but routine indie, well chosen though perhaps a bit sparse techno, hip hop, things Andy Kershaw passed him and the odd thing that makes you think "how much longer can this excruciating shit possibly go on for?" and makes your mum come in and look confused.

In this case the part of my mum was played by my girlfriend getting home from work early during Afrirampo and making it clear that she would be watching Neighbours soon and I had the length of her shower to stop listening to stupid Japanese Avant-pop. I myself tutted at Deltron 3030 as although I used to listen to all of their albums and that, I only really liked the lovely production and it is surely obvious that Del Tha Funkee ****sapien (ffs) is the worst rapper ever, rivalled only by Pedal Car Turbo B out of Snap! (their exclamation).

I used to love Low, like Sleater Kinney before, would never listen to them now. I quite enjoyed it, but wasn't prompted to go rushing back.

I will be hoping for Tiger Trap, Christmas Island, the clutch of African tracks that I am perhaps racistly lumping together and that I misspelled on last.fm, and, maybe surprisingly, Michael Yonkers to feature on the Festive 50 this year. Obviously The Pastels, This Heat, Peru Ubu and Television Personalities I knew to varying degrees and they were well chosen. I thought the closing Aphex track was a nice choice (and obviously was chosen for the final moments).

Thanks for sending me your CD Maddix, I liked it and will listen to it again.

I was trying to tone it down due to the naysayers though it didn't work as they still moaned. I thought the Christmas Island track filled that void well tbh.
