The word from the tents 18 July 2010 23:59 (permalink)
Come on, nincompoops, let's have some feedback.

I know Maddix will be touching-down any moment, ready to wax his ginger lady's legs fresh for the morning. Did you miss all of the best stuff again this year, Jan?

What was the weekend in Melvinland 2010 like, any body?

I saw Marcus Brigstocke reporting live from the festival on the Andrew Marr show this morning. Made me homesick.

Moochoo is no more! Now (rising from the ashes, like a fiery phoenix, and regenerated, as unlike Doctor Who as possible) comes Mr Moochoo. http://www.last.fm/user/MrMoochoo31

          It's good to be back.

Was an enjoyable event. Met Beerose and Nigey_Boy, no one else though. I think Nico spent the whole weekend hiding so he didn't have to buy me that pint.

Me, as long as you don't let FR off the dangler for lazy booking, and suggest that Belle & Sebastian were better than Nick Cave.

Thursday I didn't get to see much as by the time the tent was set up and stuff I'd missed Forster and didn't know when Kennedy was on so just went and sat in poetry for a while catching the slam poetry competition (no grouchland entry) and the Aisle 16 boys who are good, especially Tim Clare.

FRIDAY we saw The Kissaway Trail. I'd seen them in 07 and quite liked them but they've not really moved on since then. They started their set really well but it kinda peetered out and felt like they blew their load too early, decent enough opener though. Then we saw Here We Go Magic who were pretty disappointing, moments of promise but fairly forgettable overall. Then it was time for YUCK who were my first MUSTSEE and they didn't disappoint, great stuff. Then whilst eating by the Lake Stage I could see most of Alice Gold's set. I've no idea who she was but she was absolutely terrible, probably the worst thing I saw all weekend. We then went and camped out in the SUNRISE arena for hours in order to get prime position for GIRLS, unfortunately sacrificing Wild Beasts and Islet in the process but c'est la vie. They were running a bit behind schedule so we saw IBLAMECOCO who was suprisingly enjoyable. Decentish pop that reminded me slightly of Marina and the Diamonds. Passed the time ok and bound to get massive. Next up were THEMIDDLEEAST who I'd really been looking forward to, I especially love the song BLOOD. They were a big disappointment though, looked bored and were dull. Next was LUNABELLE who were pretty poor also. Then it was Tokyo Police Club who were good fun, had a pretty wild crowd too with lots of moshing and crowdsurfing. GIRLS then came on and did not disappoint, amazing stuff. I was also just behind Beerose but didn't get the chance to speak at this point, she had a child either side of her both of whom looked no older than about 8. I was later told one of these happened to be none other than popular forum member BITTE ORCA. If only I'd known at the time. The National were next over in THEWORDARENA and were great as expected, really intense set to not a massive crowd, I think everyone was at Florence who I could occassionally hear warbling as we walked about. We then went back to poetry where some awful woman was finishing. Then Tim Clare came on again who was obv good then it was EDDIE ARGOS who was fun, not acoustic though, he had a keyboard player and electric guitarist. I pretty much was asleep by the end of his set so went back to the tent and did exactly that.

SATURDAYS started early with ACTIVE CHILD who was ace. Then went and saw Josie Long who was really disappointing actually. Did a large part of her set in this chav astronaut charachter which was pretty crap then she slagged off the Tories which was obviously good but not exactly challenging herself DISAPPOINTING JOSIE. Then saw SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS who were good but nowhere near as good as when I saw them in Norwich, I think they suit intimate venues much better. Next up we saw Standard Fare, I love their album but they weren't particularly great live. They have a certain ramshackle charm to them but at times it felt like they'd never met/rehersed together. Next up were Frightened Rabbit who were decent enough, as you'd expect really. I then decided it would be hilarious to see David Ford instead of Zun Zun Egui purely because I used to like Easyworld in my teens but now think Fordy is a knob who takes himself too seriously. Bad decision but blame alcohol. Next up were The Maccabees who were decent as you'd expect. Then as I was going to get some food BEEROSE came said hi, SHE IS NICE. I then caught a large portion of Frankie and the Heartstrings whilst eating, they were ook. We then made our way back and caught the end of Crystal Castles which consisted of Alice Glass crowdsurfing for the entire set, barely even singing and punching a fan whilst shouting get off my tits or something like that. THEN IT WAS BELLE AND SEBASTIAN TIME. it was disappointly easy to get to the front for them but my word they nailed it 10 OUT OF 10 PERFORMANCE AMAZING

Didn't bother with Tom Jones today as we were putting the tent in the car and stuff. Came in for Strange Boys who were ok but bit lost on the main stage. Much better when I saw them the other week. Then it was Spectrals who were ace, even better than I expected and just about every person watching them seemed to be in another band, there were artist pass stickers on jeans EVERYWHERE. Then went and saw Egyptian Hip Hop who were ok then Dirty Projectors who it was a fight to get in for, not because they had a huge crowd but because MUMFORD AND SONS SEEMED TO HAVE THE WHOLE FESTIVAL WATCHING THEM AND THEY ALL WANTED TO LEAVE ONCE MUMFORD FINISHED COS THEY WERNT COOL ENOUGH TO WATCH DIRTY PROJECTORS. Was a joke, it felt like we were the only ones going towards the main stage whilst everyone else left. Dirty Projectors were good but perhaps not as good as I'd expected. I had to leave a couple of songs from the end because I was so hungry my belly was properly rumbling and gurgling. Didn't bother with Midlake or Yeasayer in the end as decided to camp out at SUNRISE again for THE PAINS so strolled in there and easily got on the barrier. Caught the end of Morning Parade who were dull run of the mill kinda band. Then These New Puritans came on who I found fairly disappointing actually, not as good as last time I saw them. Then whilst waiting for THE PAINS OF BEING THE MAIN EVENT a hand reached out and me and popular forum member NIGEY_BOY shared a brief moment, it was LOVELY. Didn't really have the chance to speak though which was a shame, also a shame was that by this point I was feeling VERY ILL and still am. I have a terrible sore throat so sympathy please. Anyway THE PAINS then came on and were amazing, PLAYED ALL THE HITS AND SOME NEWIES, then Darwin Deez came on and was the hero that he is GREAT.

Overall it was another great festival. The crowd was noticably younger this year, lots of drunk 16/17 year olds about but I guess that was to be expected by the lineup. I didn't really notice the extra 5000 that much, probably because they were all kids and knee high.

Sounds good, but it's deeply depressing that every fool and his frog flocked to see fukking Florence and manky  Mumford and Sons. The crowd at Latitude seem to prefer run-of-the-pit chart guff to the masked men proffering something a little different. It bodes ill for the future. What's the point of opera and theatre if Kasabian are headlining?

The thought of Mumford, Florence, Corine, Tom, James and The Feeling really make being skint a rather nice place to be.

What did Belle & Sebastian treat you to song wise?

Yeah the amount of people in the campsite I overheard this morning saying to friends WHATS THE PLAN FOR TODAY THEN and the response being STAY IN THE CAMPSITE ALL DAY THEN MUMFORD AND SONS, THE TEMPER TRAP THEN VAMPIRE WEEKEND was scary. These mainstream friendly bands really are taking over.

Belle and Sebastian's set was fairly predictable with no real suprises but it was just so lovely to have them back and it was a real good atmosphere.

I'm sure the actual setlist will surface online soon but off the top of my very sozzled head I can remember The Boy with the Arab Strap, I'm a Cuckoo, Legal Man, If You Find Yourself Caught in Love, Funny Little Frog, Step Into My Office, Fox in the Snow, Judy and the Dream of Horses,Sukie in the graveyard, The State that I am in, Get me Away from Here I'm Dying, If You're Feeling Sinister OH AND TWO NEW ONES

Yeah, let's deal with the big issues of the day, eh, Hoppo?

Opera is an art form, which - though varied as any other - tends to comprise rather more ingenuity than your average Florence song. Plus, there's something rather jolly about seeing opera in the middle of a pine wood. Faced with that or Mumford and kids, you can rename me Carmen. Opera just means work, anyway - and there have been plenty of good twos.

Mainly, it’s something off the battered track – something one doesn’t see everyday (which the festival should be applauded for). I’d rather have Bob Wyatt though.

As for the font, I don't control it; the Moochoo gremlin has spared me the unusual layout in favour of unusual font.

My words should tower over those of the peasantry, anyway.

Opera is an art form, which - though varied as any other - tends to comprise rather more ingenuity than your average Florence song. Plus, there's something rather jolly about seeing opera in the middle of a pine wood. Faced with that or Mumford and kids, you can rename me Carmen. Opera just means work, anyway - and there have been plenty of good twos.

soo soo sorry simon, my bad again, i  thought opera's were just a precursors of musicals. only sung in loud Italian voices,,,just show how wrong a guy can be

Not sure as I still don't know which one he was as when I got the chance to speak to her she was alone. My throat really hurts Thomas.

its pretty disappointing that maddix only met two forum regulars, and nigey_boy only briefly...that one chap i would like to have a long talk at....

the real question must be though, did maddix85 get his free can of wine ?
